Vintage Susan Bates No 6 Rug Punch Needle with Packaging & Instructions

Rug punch needle with wooden handle. Includes original packaging with illustrated threading instructions & directions for use. Needle has a wire gauge that can be used to make short loops or removed to make long ones. Tool is approximately 5.5 inches long (13.97 cm).

Rug Punch Needle Threading & Use Instructions

The following instructions & the image above are from the packaging of this particular needle punch.

  1. Thread yarn through eye (A) from outside, draw through tube and out eye (B), leave one inch of yarn protruding from point (B).
  2. Attach rug foundation to frame stamped side up – always work from this side.
  3. Hold needle grooved side toward direction you are working.
  4. Push point through material as far as it will go.
  5. Be sure loose end of yarn (1 inch) remains on bottom side of foundation when needle is withdrawn.
  6. Withdraw needle carefully to the surface – do not raise above surface. Make stitches close, 5 stitches to an inch.
  7. Follow design outlined on foundation first. Then fill in balance.
  8. At the end of each skein of yarn, or when changing colors, push needle through foundation and then cut yarn at eye (B), trim these ends to length of loops.
