About Latch Hook Kits
Latch hooking is a fun and relaxing craft. It’s also an easy craft to learn & only requires three supplies; canvas, yarn, & a latch hook tool. These vintage kits generally supply canvas and yarn, but usually don’t include a hook.
Once you have your hook you’re ready to begin! The canvas is printed with the design & the yarn is pre-cut, making it easy to start hooking away. Most kits include instructions for using the latch hook. It may seem hard or awkward at first, but once you get the hang of it you’ll see how easy it is!
Latch Hooking Instructions
Like I said, your kit should include instructions, but here are some general instructions to get you going.
- Fold 1 piece of yarn in half. Slip hook through looped yarn. Hold looped yarn to side just below latch of open hook.
- Begin at left edge, bottom row of design. Insert hook into first hole under thread of canvas and out hole directly above. Thread of canvas is over hook and latch is open.
- Move yarn upward & begin to remove hook. With free hand bring both ends of yarn over latch and hold between latch and hook. Pull hook back holding yarn ends until latch closes. Continue pulling hook under canvas thread. Let go of yarn ends. Pull hook completely though hole and yarn loop, forming a knot.
- Gently pull ends to tighten knot. Pull shorter end if uneven. Hook each adjoining hole across first row, then across each row above.
Tips
Sit at a table to latch hook. Weight the top of the canvas with something heavy that won’t fall over when your tugging & moving the canvas around.
Always work in one direction. Don’t hook left to right on one row & change right to left in the next row.
Finish the entire row. And start the next row directly above it. It may be tempting to jump around the canvas & fill in all the pretty colors first, but don’t.
