Automatic Rug Hook Needle Shuttle Threading Instructions
The following instructions are from the box of this particular shuttle.
First, place burlap rug pattern on wood frame, stretching tightly while fastening with thumb tacks, about 1.5 to 2” apart. The stamped side of burlap pattern must be on top (which is the wrong side when completed).
To thread needle, follow illustration above, allowing yarn to feed through freely from the hole at the top of handle. About 2” of yarn should extend from the point of the needle.
To operate needle, hold handles, retaining upright position. This being a shuttle style instrument, operated with an alternating up and down motion, the spacing of stitches is automatic, the needle moving in the direction the point faces, which is the threaded side. Now insert entire needle point so that the presserfoot rests on the burlap, with opposite handle raised all the way up, then down again with the same side, then up again with the opposite side, proceeding to continue with the same motion, which makes the loops or stitches on the right side of the rug. When making a complete turn in the opposite direction, keep looper in the burlap. Each row of stitches should be close together, so that the burlap is covered on the side where the work is being done. Use a few drops of oil between handles, in the center slot of needle, whenever necessary.
A few moments of practice is recommended before starting your rug. Do not operate instrument too rapidly, maintain a steady, uniform pace, presserfoot resting lightly on burlap at all times.
